Who we are:
A group of librarians and others, working to engage K-12 students with government information through teachers, school librarians, and Internet avenues.
Founded:
2006, as a subgroup of the Kansas Library Association's Government Documents Roundtable.
Members:
Coordinator and Co-Founder is Martha Childers, Government Documents Librarian at Johnson County Library in Overland Park, KS. Members and sponsors are primarily from the University of Mount Union (OH), State Library of Kansas, University of Iowa, University of Central Missouri, El Paso Public Library (TX); Visiting Library Service and Muskingum University (all in OH). Corporate sponsors: ConstitutionFacts.com, Naperville, IL, and Mannington Mills, Inc., Salem, NJ.; Government Partner: Defense Commissary Agency; Organizational Partner: Department of New York Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW.
Mission:
Our goal is to promote government information in order to engage K-12 students in learning about history, culture, science, and government through games and other interactive activities; to assist teachers and school librarians with locating teaching aids, lesson plans, and exciting tools to enhance students ' learning, and to provide librarians with a collection of free government resources to advance their reference interview and collection development decisions.
Projects:
1) Creating links to government information resources useful to K-12 students via its wikis/websites at http://govdocs4children.pbworks.com/, etc.
2) Constitution Day Poster Design Contest, held annually since 2007.
Constitution Day Poster Design Contest - Statistics
2007 - 61 entries from 8 states and 1 country (Department of Defense schools in Japan) with 10 winners.
2008 - 1,100 entries from 7 states and 0 countries with 14 winners.
2009 - 2,395 entries from 37 states and 3 countries (Department of Defense schools in Italy, Japan, and Korea) with 13 winners.
2010 - 9,399 entries from 45 states and 3 countries (Department of Defense schools in Italy, Japan, and Korea) with 22 winners.
2011 - More than 30,000 entries from 50 states and the District of Columbia, and 30 countries with 44 winners/finalists.
Marketing:
Members make presentations at the state, regional, and national level and write articles about how to promote use of government resources to students and teachers.
